The City of Thunder Bay has announced a new design for the awards presented to recipients at the annual Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards. Growth, by local artist boy Roland, was selected by a jury to become the new award distributed in all categories at the 2017 and 2018 ceremonies. The design features a ceramic hand with a piece of amethyst set in the centre of the palm, mounted on a wooden base, representing the continued development and vibrancy of Thunder Bay’s cultural sector.

“Growth captures what the Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards are about – creativity and excellence in the local arts and heritage scene,” said Ash Young, Cultural Development & Events Supervisor. “We are thrilled to have boy Roland’s unique design become part of the annual event.”

 Boy Roland’s design was selected through an open competition administered by the City’s Recreation and Culture Division and Public Art Committee. This is the first year that the City will use one design for all award categories with the intent that Growth will become emblematic of the annual event.

 "I am very excited to have my design play such a special role in honouring the many deserving award recipients throughout Thunder Bay,” said boy Roland. “Hopefully my design will serve as a reminder for all the recipients of their many achievements far into the future.”

 The awards will be presented at the 7th annual Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at Magnus Theatre. The achievements and contributions of local artists and historians, cultural professionals, organizations and supporters are celebrated in a wide range of categories. The 2017 awards show is sponsored by CBC Thunder Bay and Magnus Theatre.
